30/12/08 The Barry Island Railway operated its last trains under the auspices of the Vale of Glamorgan Railway Company Ltd on Sunday. The trackbed and associated buildings are owned by the Vale of Glamorgan Council who have now leased the site to a new operator and it is not known whether Cambrian Transport intends to operate the line as a heritage railway. A new website has been launched aimed at providing a diary of locomotive and rolling stock sightings in the Exeter area in the 1960's and 1970's. 24/12/08 56101 has been purchased for preservation by a consortium currently involved in other preserved class 56's. The 'Grid' is currently stored at Immingham and a home for it is being finalised. The loco shed at Blunsdon on the Swindon and Cricklade Railway was broken into during the night 22/23 December and a number of locomotives and items of rolling stock were vandalised, including resident ED, E6003 on which the damage is being assessed. 19/12/08 A timetable for the Bo'ness Class 37 Event on January 3rd is here. There are no loco allocations as yet but the majority of services will see 37025 and 37175 working in top & tail formation. A timetable and loco roster for the ELR January 10th running day is here. The event will feature 33109 40135 47402 and 50015. 17/12/08 The Class 37 Locomotive Group plan to have 37003 certified for mainline running by 2010 to allow it operate a limited number of railtours celebrating the golden jubilee of the class 37. The group will be launching a fundraising effort to achieve this. The loco itself is due to move from the NRM at Shildon to a new home at the Mid Norfolk Railway. The Brush Type 4 Funds 47746 (47605) is to move from Long Marston to Barrow Hill where it will be employed on site by Cargo-D. Two photos of, small but essential, work on 45149 are here and here |

11/12/08 47580 is to visit the Mid Norfolk Railway to work the lines Santa Specials this month. The recently mainline certified 47 hauled a track machine from Tyseley to West Ealing today - a photo is here - and is expected to work light to Dereham tomorrow to take up its duties. The loco will remain at the MNR to take part in the March Diesel Event. 20142 worked its farewell special at the Llangollen Railway on Sunday. Photos are here. The 20, now a stablemate of 20189, left Llangollen the following day for Barrow Hill. 73139 has been returned to use at the Weardale Railway and has been utilised on the lines Santa Specials. A photo is here The control cubicle was fitted to 50026 at Old Oak Common this week. The cubicle was rebuilt to a high standard at the locos former home at the MOD base in Bicester. The engine and overhauled generators were installed last month and the loco is on course for its first start up in preservation. The traditional Gloucestershire & Warwickshire Railway Xmas Diesel Event on December 27th will be operating between Toddington & Gotherington due to a landslip near Cheltenham Racecourse. A timetable will be issued for the event shortly. The Wensleydale Railway are operating a Sulzer day on January 4th featuring 47715 and and HNRC's 47703. Departures are 1005, 1205, 1450 ex Leeming Bar and 1105, 1305 and 1550 from Redmire. 47715 is booked to work the 1005 and 1450 return trips whilst 47703 will work the 1205 from Redmire. 2/12/08 31452 has arrived at the Weardale Railway minus a few windows after a weekend stay in a layby on the A68. 25067 which was expected to leave Wolsingham has not made the move south and has remained at Wolsingham 27056 will visit the Nene Valley Railway for the lines Diesel Event next March. 28/11/08 31452 has arrived at the Weardale Railway for use on the lines Santa Specials and leaving the Weardale is D5217 (25067) which has moved to the Battlefield Line where, on account of its working steam heat boiler, it will also see use on Santa Specials at Shackerstone. The Llangollen Diesel Group are operating a farewell run for long time resident 20142 which has been sold and will shortly leave the line. The loco will work a return trip to Carrog on Sunday December 7th entitled 'The Whistling Wardrobe Festive Farewell' departing Llangollen at 1230. Tickets are £10 and are only available on the train with proceeds going to the LDG. |
26/11/08 27007 was started at the Mid Hants Railway last Sunday - the first time the loco has run in eight years. The 27 is undergoing a full overhaul at Ropley and much work remains to be done before it can haul trains again. A photo is here The Epping and Ongar Railway which runs six and a half miles over the former London Transport line is currently closed while work to re-instate the infrastructure to allow loco hauled trains to operate on the line is completed. The fleet consists of a DMU but the railway are hoping to attract both steam and diesel locomotives as well as further DMU's to the line. 23/11/08 50026 has had its power unit installed at Old Oak Common, the overhauled main generator was re-united with the engine earlier this month and it is planned to start the loco before the end of the year. 'Indomitable' is expected to make its first public appearance at the Eastleigh Works open day next year. The restoration of 45108 is making good progress with the loco undergoing bodywork repairs at Butterley prior a repaint into BR blue in the Spring. 17/11/08 37403 and 37413 have been delivered to their new home at Bo'ness. Photos here and here 20189 has left the London Underground depot at West Ruislip and has returned to Butterley. 11/11/08 55016 has left Peak Rail and has moved to Barrow Hill for further storage pending overhaul for service with Direct Rail Services. 37403 has continued its journey north tonight moving from Bescot in the consist of EWS service 6S73. The loco moved to Bescot from Margam yesterday. Work on 27007 at Ropley is continuing; Both battery boxes have been stripped and rebuilt, the battery switch rebuilt and reinstated. Engine oil will now be added with a view to a possible start up shortly. Bodywork repairs and the rebuild of no.2 cab continues. 6/11/08 Pathfinder Railtours are advertising a tour to take D1015 to Kyle of Lochalsh in June 2009. The three day railtour will start in Bristol on Friday 19th June and will return South on the Sunday. Other planned dates for D1015 are; 12th September Didcot - Blaenau Ffestiniog, and 31st October Bristol - Buxton. D7017 has had its engine re-installed after repairs at Williton and the loco is on course for a start up once final assembly is complete. Work on D1010's 'B' engine is progressing well with all 12 pistons and assemblies returned to the engine block after machining. D9531 has had its engine re-fitted as part of its extensive overhaul at Bury. 2/11/08 The SRPS have announced the purchase of 37403. The former BRE Ltd loco is currently stored at Margam and is expected to move north to Bo'ness for restoration. 37413 continued its journey north on the 24th in the consist of 6S73 from Bescot to Mossend where it awaits forwarding to Bo'ness. A photo of it at Bescot is here 27056 has moved to a new home at the Great Central Railway having previously been based at the Northampton & Lamport Railway. The Baby Deltic Project have successfully restored to working order the sole remaining 'Baby Deltic' T9-29 engine. 21/10/08 37413 has left Margam by rail today destined initially for Bescot although the locos ultimate destination is the Bo'ness & Kinneil Railway. 33002 is unable to take make its debut at the SDR this year due to a coolant leak in no.4 Cylinder which has been removed for a spare. 19/10/08 50044 worked its first mainline trip since late 1999 on Saturday when, paired with 50049, it worked a Manchester - Minehead and return railtour. 16/10/08 The West Somerset Railway are holding their Autumn Event on October 25/26 featuring D9526, D832 and 47077. The railway intend to have a set of stock with ETH reinstated ready for the weekend. 10/10/08 56098 is due to move from the Northampton & Lamport Railway to the Battlefield Line today, where it will now be based. The 'Grid' will undergo turbocharger repairs before re-entering traffic. Updated timetables for the GCRN Diesel Event this weekend are here. The DMU on Sunday morning has been replaced with a loco-hauled service (due to crew shortage for the DMU) & following feedback that the 08 run on Saturday evening was too late for many, it has been removed from the timetable. However, it is hoped to “top” a service from Ruddington to 50-Steps Jct with the 08 on Saturday afternoon if at all possible. |
9/10/08 HNRC have sold 55016 to Direct Rail Services with a view to returning the Deltic to mainline service although no timescales have been advised. The Stratford 47 Groups 47580 is to undergo a mainline test run today with 47773 going along for insurance. Times are; Tyseley 1203, Leamington 1256-1312, Banbury 1343 Oxford 1410-1415, Banbury 1440, Leamington 1501 and Tyseley 1541. 6/10/08 HNRC advise that both the Gordon Highlander Preservation Group and Martin Walker, the owner of 55022, have failed in their bids to purchase 55016. A further announcement regarding 16's future will be made as developments take place. 37023 has left Brush in Loughborough and has been transported to Allelys Yard for further storage. The loco is ultimately bound for the Pontypool & Blaenavon Railway. 26/9/08 The Western Hind railtour with D1015 scheduled for 27 September to Falmouth has been cancelled because of pathing issues. 37409 which has been stored at Bo'ness since BRE Limited ceased trading has left Scotland and was moved by road to Barrow Hill for a career with DRS 73136 hauled recently restored 73210 to its new home on the Mid Norfolk Railway yesterday. Both ED's will take part in the lines English Electric Event Peak Rail are holding a running day for 55016 this weekend before it leaves the line for storage at Long Marston. 22/9/08 56097 completed a series of loaded test runs at the GCRN on Saturday, hauling five air braked coaches and 20154 on the rear as insurance against failure. No problems were encountered will make its passenger debut at the GCRN Diesel Gala on October 11th and 12th. Photos are here and here The Swindon and Cricklade Railway will have E6003 in action for their Diesel Event on September 28th, which it is hoped will also see double headed 03s on some services. The ED will be taken out of traffic after the event for a period of maintenance and repair. 18/9/08 31108 was tripped from Butterley to Toton and then Toton to Doncaster yesterday and today continued onwards to the Wensleydale Railway today so as to take part in the lines Diesel Event this weekend. EWS loco 60040 will also be appearing. A timetable and loco roster for Fridays DMU drag with 31108 and the main event on Saturday & Sunday is here. A1A locomotives have had four 'extremely low hour' EE pistons stolen from their stores vehicle recently which were for fitting to 31418. All had standard ring grooves, three were dirty with old rings in and one was cleaned up with no rings in. They were in excellent condition and to replace them with new will cost around £3000. It looks like they were 'stolen to order' so groups are asked to keep an eye out if they get offered some pistons for EE classes from 20 through to 50. As they were new they have no ID stamps on the crown but the group would recognise them. The police have been informed. Following an inspection by HMRI on 4th September 2008, the entire 10 miles at the GCRN has now been passed fit for 25mph operation. The first event to benefit will be the GCRN’s October 11+12 Diesel Gala, which will also debut 56097, which after completion of its restoration has been on-test at GCRN in recent weeks. Latest news, and the timetable will be posted to www.gcrn.co.uk. The DPS are marking the 25th anniversary of the closure of Finsbury Park Depot on October 4/5 with and event at Barrow Hill. 16/9/08 The Llangollen Diesel Group have announced the results of a poll to decide which locos will remain at the railway and what will be leaving. 25313, 37240 and 47449 topped the poll and will be remaining at the line, with 20142 and 46010 leaving. The LDG are evaluating bids for the 46 to decide its new owner. The Llangollen Diesel Group have also said that the diesel event planned for October 3-5 will be cancelled because of problems providing crews. The Wensleydale Railway Diesel Event on September 20/21 will see visiting traction after all in the shape of 31108 which will arrive at the line behind an EWS loco which may also take part in the event along with 47703 and 47715. 12/9/08 The Wensleydale Railway Diesel Event on 20/21 September has had to be scaled back due to problems obtaining paths to bring in the visiting traction by rail. The event will still go ahead with residents 47703 & 47715 although efforts are still being made to secure a visiting engine. The CFPS are promoting a tour from Rawtenstall to Edinburgh on January 3rd to be hauled by 40145, although 40135 will also work the train on the ELR sections. 11/9/08 The 71A Locomotive group have announced that 33012 will receive a ten year general overhaul at the site of Eastleigh Loco Works. Bruce Knights, current owner of the lease, have offered the erection shop, with full works cranes and facilities to 71A group members for this overhaul. Major components will be either replaced or completely overhauled, and the lifting facilities will enable access to bodywork that is otherwise extremely difficult to deal with. Provision for TPWS and OTMR equipment will be made, but no final decision to register for mainline running has been made at this stage. More details are here The Growler Group have taken custodianship of 37248 which is owned by three working members of the group under the banner of Type 3 Traction. The 37 is currently on hire to West Coast Railways and regularly working on the mainline. 4/9/08 20166 has left the Bodmin & Wenford Railway by road for the Battlefield Line at Shackerstone 45149 had its overhauled power unit installed at Toddington on August 4th. 29/8/08 20189 has left Butterley for the LUL depot at West Ruislip and having been fitted with the necessary safety equipment to operate on LUL lines it is set to work T&T with 'Sarah Siddons' on a number of special trains on September 14. More details are here 20166 will be a guest engine at the Battlefield Line Diesel Event on September 13/14. More details are here. The HNRC owned machine will leave its long time home of Bodmin in the coming weeks. 27/8/08 47635 will be leaving Swanage for a new home at Peak Rail and it is planned for the 47 to arrive at Rowsley in time for the lines Diesel Event on September 20/21 37679 has had the reduntant sandite equipment removed at Pitsford. The sandite system was installed into the loco during its final months in operation with EWS. 22/8/08 Dean Forest based ED E6001 has had its main generator returned from Dowding & Mills following overhaul and was yesterday mated with the engine. The power unit will be re-installed into the loco next week. 20/8/08 Asset Consultants Walker Singleton have made former BRE locos 37403, 37409 and 37414 available for sale by tender with a closing date of September 12. More details are on their website in the 'Asset Disposals' section. 24054 will be the visiting engine for the Llangollen Diesel Event on 3-5 October. This event will also be the last chance to sample some of the resident locos on the line. D9016 will operate for the last time at Peak Rail in a special event on September 27 & 28. 17/8/08 55022 hauled 40145 and 26010 from Carnforth to Bo'ness on Friday. The 26 had been visiting for the West Coast Open Day and the 40 and 55 will be working the SRPS 'Routes & Branches' tour next weekend. The remains of 31188 have been transported to TJ Thomsons scrapyard in Stockton from the Wensleydale Railway. Photos of the return of D1062 are here. 12/8/08 The Class 15 Preservation Society have begun work on completing the restoration of MetroVick D5705. A new section has been added to the C15PS website to detail progess - here The Peak Locomotive Group have started work in earnest to return 45108 to working order with the loco being taken undercover at Swanwick. 1/8/08 45132 had its generator removed over the weekend and the defective machine has been sent away for specialist repair. The Mid Hants based Peak has not worked for over eight years. The 45132 group would like to thank the Mid Hants Railway for the assistance in making the lift possible. 31/7/08 Wensleydale Railway resident 31188 has been stripped of all re-usable parts at Leeming Bar and will shortly leave by road for TJ Thompsons scrapyard in Stockton. The 31 was purchased from preservation by HNRC in May along with 31166 which is also expected to make the journey to Stockton. Photos here here and here |

27/6/08 50040 has made its final journey from the Coventry Railway Centre to a scrapyard in Halesowen. Photo here 31162 has arived at Toddington to take part in the GWR diesel event next weekend. 28/7/08 33002 was started for the first time in preservation today. The successful start-up is the culmination of three years restoration at Buckfastleigh, although more electrical work needs to be completed before the loco can move under its own power. 23/7/08 The D1015 railtour from Paddington to Swansea on August 9th has been cancelled because of problems pathing the train on the return journey via Hereford. Barrow Hill based 45105 has been started for the first time in around four years. A photo is here. 19/7/08 The GWR are running two 'green timetable' extra trains on the following dates which are diesel hauled; 13th August will be 47701 & 27th August will be 31162. Departure times from Toddington are at 10.30, 13.00 and 15.15 and from the Racecourse at 11.15, 14.00 and 16.00. Each day gives approx 60 miles of haulage behind the locos. Due to the change of ownership 55016 will not be fulfilling its booked running days at Peak Rail. HNRC have stated that the loco has been purchased as a commercial venture and expect it to be re-sold. 17/7/08 The WLA have announced that D1062 will re-enter traffic at the Severn Valley Railway on August 16th working the SVR diesel diagram, The loco is undergoing a repaint into BR maroon at Kidderminster and will return to Bridgnorth at the end of the month for final checks and an exam. 55016 which is currently at Peak Rail has been sold to HNRC. The loco will work the Peak Rail diesel diagram on the 30th August. 33109 has arrived at Embsay to take part in the lines diesel event this weekend. A revised timetable is here 40145 hauled visitors to the East Lancs event away from the line on Tuesday; D1023 was dropped at Barrow Hill whilst 31108 and 45041 were left at Butterley and 37906 returned to the Severn Valley Railway. Agreement has been reached for 37901, which is unable to return to Llangollen, to remain at the East Lancs for the rest of the year. The Mid Hants Railway are running a special diesel diagram on August 2nd utilising new arrival 33053 along with resident 33208 before the latter is taken out of traffic for repairs. 14/7/08 The former 56003 and now 56312 underwent testing at the Nene Valley Railway last week and will shortly leave for the RVEL workshops in Derby for loadbanking and a return to the mainline. 25/6/08 50040 will leave the Coventry Railway Centre at the end of this week and move to the Sims scrapyard in Halesowen and is expected to by scrapped shortly after arrival. The final stripping and removal of flamecuts has taken place. A photo is here The West Somerset Railway are suffering a steam loco shortage and one daily diagram will be diesel hauled until further notice and on the following dates all trains will be diesel hauled Friday 27 June, Friday 4 July, Tuesday 8 July, Wednesday 9 July and Thursday 10 July. The line will work to an ammended green timetable and motive power will be one or two from 25173, 33048 and 47840. 24/6/08 50026 has left the RVEL workshops in Derby and moved by road to its long time home depot of Old Oak Common where the loco will be re-united with its power unit. 18/6/08 A recent working party has made good progress on 50050 at Yeovil with the loco undergoing repairs to the bodywork prior to a repaint into BR blue livery. The faulty component in the defective KV10 load regulator, which has prevented the loco taking power, has also been identified and a replacement part is being sought. A photo is here 50008 is expected to be released from LNWR at Crewe in the Autumn. The loco is having a new set of cannon tubes made which will allow the loco to be re-united with its bogies. The welding work is finished and the engine and generator will be installed in the coming months. It will then move to the Nene Valley Railway for painting and running in. 17/6/08 D182 (46045) has unfortunately been withdrawn from traffic due to corrosion in the exhaust silencer which has led to considerable contamination in the engine room (and particularly the generator). As a consequence the loco will not be attending the ELR gala as was planned. The Peak Locomotive Company are sorry that D182 has had to be pulled from the event at the last minute, but the ELR understand the position that the group find themselves in with D182. The ELR event organisers are currently sourcing a replacement. 13/6/08 Recent loco moves has seen 31108 and D1023 transferred to the East Lancs Railway for the July Diesel Week. Both locos had been in attendance at the KWVR event with 20087. The South Devon Railway locos were taken south to the West Somerset Railway - photo here to take part in this weekends Mixed Traffic Event. 12/6/08 37407 and 37424 have been brought south to Crewe from Motherwell & Mossend in a WCRC convoy and will be forwarded to the Churnet Valley Railway by road. The Brush Type 4 Funds 47746 was started up at Long Marston on Tuesday and despite a minor electrical fault the engine ran with no problems. 33111 has completed its move from Barrow Hill to Swanage. 3/4/08 GWR based 47376 underwent a test run on Sunday following engine repairs but after inspection it was found that further cylinder liners are leaking and the loco will be taken out of traffic for repairs. The loco will be sidelined the foreseeable future as the priority for the Brush Type 4 Fund will be to undertake the work required to re-certify the steam heat boiler on 47105. 26/3/08 Bedale Railway Engines Ltd (BRE) have been placed into liquidation and the company assets will be made available for disposal. It is highly likely that 37403 and 37414 will be sold for scrap. |

18/3/08 The Class 15 Preservation Society, ELR Diesel Department & Co-Bo Locomotive Group have announced that agreement has been reached for the team currently restoring Class 15 D8233 at the East Lancashire Railway in Bury to also undertake the initial restoration on Metrovick Co-Bo D5705 also based at the ELR. Both projects have similar restoration needs, therefore running the restorations side by side, utilising the vast skill base within the ELR diesel department and C15PS will benefit both projects. D5705 will be shunted into position with D8233 at the Loco Works site on the ELR in early May so work can begin. 15/3/08 45108 has begun its journey from Crewe to the Midland Railway Centre having been hauled to the Heritage Centre from the LNWR Carriage sidings today. The loco will complete its move to Butterley by road. |
12/3/08 E6006 hauling an engineers train on March 10th became the first train to traverse the Severn Valley Railway from end to end since June last year after storms badly damaged many sections of the railway. The railway will to re-open to passengers later this month. |
8/3/08 D1010 will not be available for the 2008 WSR season after investigations have found further problems with the 'B' engine requiring a complete strip down and rebuild. The work by the DEPG at Williton is being undertaken whilst the group also repair two Hymeks one of which, D7017 will make a return to traffic later this year. |

4/3/08 40012 is unable to attend the Great Central Railway 1960's Event this month as a result of problems booking the road transportation, although it is still planned for the loco to arrive at Loughborough in time for the railways three day diesel event in April. |
29/2/08 37254 will be making its first runs in preservation at the Spa Valley Railway's ‘Spring Diesel Weekend' on 26/27 April. The loco is nearing the end of a five year overhaul and it is anticipated that the locomotive will move from its restoration base to Tunbridge Wells during March. |

24/2/08 40145 will visit the Nene Valley Railway on 19/20 April joining 40106 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of D200's inaugural run from Liverpool Street to Norwich on 18th April 1958. There will be five class 40 hauled round trips on each day with a day rover costing £13. |
22/2/08 37418 has left Toton and has been transported to the Allelys Hauliers yard for temporary storage until such time as resources are available with HNRC at Barrow Hill to undertake a bogie change, although it planned to undertake some mechanical work on the loco before it goes to Barrow Hill. 20/2/08 37079 which was due to leave Barrow Hill for restoration this month has been subjected to the theft of all traction motor cabling during the locos storage at Barrow Hill and as a result the proposed sale has been cancelled with the full agreement of all parties. |
16/2/08 The North Yorkshire Moors Diesel Event on May 9-11 will feature visiting locos 20189 20227 46045 D1015 and 55019 with one further visitor to be confirmed, these will work alongside 25278 37350 and 50027. As per last year the event will also be extended onto the Whitby - Battersby section of the mainline with the 25, Western and Deltic including two train running on Sunday utilising both 55019 and D1015. 12/2/08 47761 has been hauled from Margam to Butterley, via a stop over at Gloucester, by 57005. The loco was purchased from EWS by the 47401 Project in April last year. The long term plan is for the loco is to be stripped for spares including donating its bogies to 47417, although it is possible the former 47564 may make some farewell runs at the MR-B prior to this. |

9/1/08 The Swanage Railway have confirmed the line-up for their Diesel Event on May 9-11 with visiting locos being 07007 20096 33111 37906 45060 and 56057. There will be an intensive three train service run from 9am each until midnight on Fri and Sat (18:30 on Sun) using an all diesel timetable. Tickets will be £15 per day, but if purchased in advance there are disounts avaliable for 2 (£25) or 3 (£35) day rover tickets. 8/1/08 47715 which is now located at the Wensleydale Railway has been sold into preservation by its previous owners. The loco was run up for the first time over the weekend. Photo and details are here |
4/1/08 47703 will work a round trip on the Wensleydale Railway on Sunday 6th January. The loco will work the 1435 Leeming Bar - Redmire and return. |
