There are 311 mainline diesel locomotives listed on this website most of which are based on privately owned heritage railway sites in the UK. Also listed are locos owned by preservation groups that are registered to operate trains on the main rail network which often undertake commercial duties as well as the normal enthusiast railtour workings.

Despite the title of the website some locos listed are not 'preserved' in the strictest sense and are simply in private ownership. It is not the intention of this website to define what is ‘preserved' but to simply provide a pictorial guide to former BR locomotives, still in existence, that are likely to work or have worked on the heritage railways network in the UK.
